Cruising is my go-to way to travel…One of my absolute fav’s! You unpack once, float from island to island, and wake up to ocean views every day—what’s not to love? Whether you’re new to cruising or a seasoned sailor, here are my top five tips to make your trip smooth, stress-free, and seriously fun.
1. Don’t Forget your Documents
Before you toss a swimsuit in your bag, double (and triple) check your travel documents. I’ve seen people turned away at the port—don’t let that be you!
Pro tip: Keep both digital and printed copies. A little prep goes a long way.
2. Pack Light, Pack Right
Cruise cabins aren’t huge, so pack smart. My must-haves:
-
Power strip (non-surge protected)
-
Motion sickness meds (just in case)
-
Day bag for excursions
-
Refillable water bottle
-
Dress-up clothes for formal or theme nights
-
Waterproof phone pouch
I also toss in snacks, mini toiletries, and a good beach read!
3. Be Flexible with Plans
Cruises offer loads of fun activities and excursions—but weather and schedules can shift. I always pre-book a few things, then leave space to just… wander. Some of my best memories came from unexpected moments. On one trip, I skipped scheduling a tour, rented a golf cart, and wandered into a little food hut run by locals. I ended up spending the afternoon there enjoying some of the best fish and fried conch fritters I’ve ever had. Totally unplanned, and totally unforgettable.
4. Download the Cruise App
I’m not big on travel apps, but this one might be a must. Depending on the cruise line, it lets you:
-
View the daily schedule
-
Book shows and excursions
-
Check your spending
-
Chat with travel buddies onboard
Just download it before you sail—Wi-Fi at sea can be slow!
5. Budget for Extras & Bring Cash
Cruises aren’t totally all-inclusive. Think: specialty dining, cocktails, spa time, shore trips, casino. I always set aside a little “fun money.” And cash? Don’t skip it—especially small bills. Handy for:
-
Tips (drivers, guides, porters)
-
Local shopping
-
Taxis in port
I keep some in my day bag and extra in the cabin safe.
Final Thoughts
Cruising blends adventure and relaxation like nothing else. With a little prep and a go-with-the-flow attitude, you’re set for an unforgettable trip—whether you’re ziplining in the jungle or sipping something fruity by the pool.
Bon voyage! Let me know—what’s your favorite cruise destination?
