Visiting O’ahu, Hawaii: What to See, Eat and Do

During my recent visit to O’ahu, I stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki, and it did not disappoint. Located right on the beach, this upscale resort offers breathtaking views and direct access to Waikīkī Beach. The infinity pool overlooking the water is absolutely stunning, and the vibe is equal parts relaxing and energizing. With on-site shopping and dining, it is still an easy walking access to other shops, restaurants, and cultural spots. The Sheraton made for a perfect stay for exploring Honolulu. Here’s our quick guide on what to see, eat, and do in this tropical hotspot.

What to See…

The heart of it all…Waikīkī Beach…perfect for beginner surfers, beach lounging, or a sunrise stroll with Diamond Head in the distance. Hike to the top of Diamond Head Crater, this is an extinct volcano for panoramic views of Honolulu and the Pacific. How about a beautiful Sunset at Magic Island or Kapi’olani Park where you can grab a spot and watch the sun dip behind the ocean horizon-it’s pure magic. And of course, we can’t forget to visit the Dole Plantation. This spot isn’t just for pineapple lovers, it’s a fun experience. Take a ride on the Pineapple Express Train, explore the garden maze, and don’t leave without trying the iconic Dole Whip: a sweet and creamy pineapple soft-serve treat that’s become a Hawaiian classic.

What to Eat

From plate lunches to fresh poke to tropical drinks…you can enjoy it all! In Waikiki, poke, loco moco, spam, and the Kulua pig are popular food items to try. When it comes to those tropical drinks, Mai Tai’s were our favorite!

  • Duke’s Waikīkī – oceanfront dining & legendary hula pie – We loved it!
  • RumFire – think island-inspired tapas, local seafood, and premium cocktails – We loved it!
  • Leonard’s Bakery – grab some of those iconic malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts) – We loved it! (oh, and there will likely be a line)

Soul Chicken ~ A Hidden Gem in Honolulu

If you’re in Honolulu and craving something that hits the spot with soul and spice, this is the place you must check out. Tucked away in Moiliili, this unassuming eatery serves up some of the crispiest, juiciest Korean-style fried chicken on the island-and it’s quickly becoming a local favorite for those in the know.

What makes Soul Chicken special? It’s all in the flavor. Whether you go for the spicy yangnyeom, soy garlic, or the classic original, each bite packs a satisfying crunch and bold, balanced seasoning. Portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and the staff always greet you with aloha. Don’t miss:

  • The spicy wings with pickled daikon on the side
  • Their secret dipping sauce-ask for it!

Open daily (but call ahead-this spot fills up fast!) This is one of those places you’ll want to keep to yourself…but it’s too good not to share.

What to Do

Waikīkī is bursting with energy, sunshine, and endless things to explore. Start your day with a walk along Kalākaua Avenue, where you can shop, people-watch, and take in the iconic palm-lined views. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a surfboard or take a beginner’s lesson-Waikīkī is one of the best places in the world to catch your first wave! For a dose of history and cultue, take a short ride to Pearl Harbor. Admission to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is completely free, which includes exhibits, museums, and access to the USS Arizona Memorial program (reservations are recommended but free). And last but definitely not the least, one of Waikīkī’s most beloved traditions is the free Friday Night Fireworks Show. Every Friday at 7:45 PM, the sky above Duke Kahanamoku Beach bursts into color, offering a dazzling display that lasts approximately 10 minutes. This weekly event has been lighting up Waikīkī since 1988. You don’t want to miss it!
